Hello! We are headed to San Ignacio in early August and will have a car. Is it possible to drive to Caracol? Is it safe? Do you need a SUV or special type of vehicle?
I think they're still recommending you time your drive with the police or military (I can't remember which) escort. When we visited Caracol with a driver in October 2016 the road was BAD. Pretty sure you'd need a 4x4 with good clearance to make the trip, especially during the rainy season and I'm not sure what rental companies allow. The road is that bad imo. The Maya site is beautiful, though!
SUV for clearance. Yes, the road is either bumpy and muddy or bumpy and dusty, but if 2 plus hrs does not phase you, you will love the drive to and from thru the Mtn Pine Ridge and Chiqiubul. Worth having a guide to for the site, natl history of the area, fauna flora, etc
Plus, won't it be super rainy season in August? Road washouts etc?
When we went in October it was rough going; the driver had to weave back and forth constantly to find the best bits of the road and we had to drive through several streams.
