We travel to S Africa at least twice a year and rent cars from OR Tambo airport from a range of rental companies. In 2013, we rented from the Budget office & drove to a remote game park with no internet/phone signal. While we were there, my credit card was used extensively - the ONLY place I had used my card was the Budget office.
In August 2016, we rented from Avis - undocumented charges were imposed at the end of the rental and I could not extract an invoice from the company to identify what the charges were.
In February 2017, we rented from Budget - not realising that they are now part of Avis. No one checked the car with us and we were not provided with the picture of the car with any damage marked. On return, the staff claimed we had damaged the bumper and imposed charges. We have objected on several occasions about the £110 charge for this damage which we did not cause. After several emails, the staff claimed that they had made a mistake in the charge and knocked £28 off the fee. An insult to our intelligence. Why had they bumped up the charge? Why did their word count for more than ours? There was no proof that the car was undamaged when we collected it and no proof that it was our fault.
Do NOT rent from these crooks unless you want to pay over the odds for your car rental due to the charges imposed afterwards and to waste time arguing about excess changes.
