There are buses available (Intercape) that go from JHB to Victoria Falls but the journeys are long and entail going through Beitbridge border post which can have long delays. It is not a recommended mode transport.

There is a luxury train service called Rovos Rail which goes directly to Victoria Falls but as far as a normal rail passenger service, there is nothing that is direct or of a reasonable standard.

Flying is by far the best and with low cost airlines now such as Fly Africa the prices aren't to exhorbitant.

You can take a comfortable Intercape bus from Johannesburg to Bulawayo but the journey can take up to 20 hours depending on congestion at the border. There are other busses on the route but not as good as Intercape. Crossing the border by bus is not complicated it is just very slow because of the sheer number of busses at the border every night. So you end up hanging around waiting for your bus to be called to immigration and then more hanging around in the queue. Once in Bulawayo you can carry on to Vic Falls by bus (4+ hours) or train (12+ hours). The train is slow and run down but still an atmospheric real African experience if you are looking for that sort of thing. And you can sleep on board on a fold down bed. However if you are just wanting to get to Vic Falls quickly then flying is the best option and you won't save much going overland as you will spend up to two days on the journey and might need to spend the night in Bulawayo en route.
