heavy duty hiking boots required for gorilla trekking

We are going to Rwanda for gorilla trekking in early Feb. what sort of gear do we need to bring with us - ie light rain jacket vs ski jacket, heavy duty hiking boots vs good waterproof running shoes, and anything else that may be helpful.

Thanks

Nina

You will only need a light rain jacket. But do bring hiking boots. The tracks are muddy and slippery and you are walking through thick jungle. Also be prepared for your boots to end up very grubby. We actually took our oldest ones and left them behind at our hotel.

The guides and porters wear wellington boots. I must admit I was envious.

....and gardening gloves to grab spiky/stingy plants as you slip down the muddy slopes.

Also hire a porter for $10 as they pull you up the slopes and stop you falling down the slopes

Yes do bring the hiking boots though just good walking shoes can still do for you as well. Other things to bring include: outfit with adapted colours for wildlife observation, raingear, a few long-sleeve shirts, slippers, sweater for cool evenings, sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sun cream, video/photo camera, a 200 mm or longer lens is very useful, reserve batteries, films and a torch.
