Hi,

It is possible to take a car ferry from Don Sak. The Raja Ferry is one of two companies that operate the route:

Seatran also operates the route:

The car ferries run from 7am to 7pm, one ferry every hour. The Seatran ferry port is also next door to the Raja Ferry port. There is no booking in advance for the ferry tickets. So be as early as possible. So if the ferry for one is fully booked, go to the other ferry port and try to get your ticket.

For Raja Ferry, you can buy return tickets when you arrive at the ferry port, so it is advisable that you do that. A return ticket gives you priority in the que when you are leaving.

As far I know, Seatran does not allow you to buy return ticket, so you will have to queue again when you want to leave the island.

All pretty easy and have done it several times myself. You may have some issues at the Thai border though if you don't own the car.

You will need either proof if ownership or at the very least a letter from the owner giving permission for the car to go to Thailand. You will also need to take out Thai insurance for the duration of the trip.

Thanks for the tips Bob. Actually have done the border crossing a few times myself and no hassles there (own vehicle).

Mainly just wanting to know if I needed to book in advance for the ferry crossing, and if the cost is not prohibitive

Not sure about booking as that would depend on season, day of week etc.

This link.... http://www.rajaferryport.com/ shows 470baht for car and driver.

We never book. We just turn up at the pier and never have any problem getting on. Only time we had to wait for hours was on the December 30th on our way back from Phuket. Peak season they usually put more ferry on to meet demands.
