New Year's Eve

we will be in Punta for New Year's Eve? What's the best way to spend it? It will be 5 women in their mid-to late 30's. We will probably want a nice dinner but other than that.. What are the suggestions?

It will all depend on how much you intend to spend.

You can find great parties, but most of them are really expensive.

Serena Hotel hosted a very nice one last year

www.serenahoteles.com/-en-punta-del-este.html

You can get in touch with them by contacting contato@lafiestapunta.com

Another one is close to Jose Ignacio called Mandala:

I think the Casino (Conrad) also has big parties, not sure how they are though

If you go by Mansa beach, there will be a lot of people on the Rambla, just celebrating - for free

Restaurants have special dinners as well. Try to get a reservation at one that has view to the ocean, so you can watch the fireworks.

You can try Virazón (http://www.virazon.com.uy/), Lo de Tere (http://www.lodetere.com/ingles/index.html), Guappa (http://www.guappa.com.uy/), among others.

Have fun!

Thanks! Yes, I knew about the mandala but it's like $500 pp if your order now and $800 if you buy later...that seemed a little excessive to me.

I may try the restaurants.

Agree with the other posting.

New Year's Eve is BIG here - people travel from all over S America to come and many need to go back the next day; all hotels are full etc etc

That means restaurants and hotels charge a lot (supply/demand).

The price /pp often refers to price per plate (rather than person), but anyway is often USD500 plus in a good restaurant or similar. so budget does matter as does timing as booking will be fast running out - remember a large % come every year and re-book the same -place every year.

Free:

Fireworks on every beach - major displays. These start just before midnight (you can be forgiven for wondering if your watch is wrong or if yhou have the wrong day) but come midnight all hell breaks loose - a war zone even - so be sure you are outside for it all - it lasts seemingly forever.

A good place to be would be Playa Mansa near town or near the marina/puerto - bring your own & sit on the beach maybe. Dancing on the streets is commonplace but especially just behind the marina/puerto where there is a block of popular bars - eg Moby Dicks - going til dawn.

All is safe & great fun - make sure you sleep in the afternoon leading up!
