Punta del Este to Rio or Buenos Aires?

Hello,

I'm planning to visit Punta del Este around Christmas/New Years. Has anyone been there around this time? What's it like? Is it a fun party town? One of the problems we are having is the airport. It's a lot less expensive to fly into Montevideo, but it's 2 hours away from Punta del Este. What's the fastest way to get to Punta del Este from Montevideo? And in addition to Punta del Este, does anyone have any recommendations as to what other cities or town are nice to visit? We're thinking either Rio or Buenos Aires. Any suggestions on all of the above would be helpful.

Why not taking a bus from PdelE to MVD? Is about 2 hours of travel (no more) and you have schedule every half hour. Here web page: www.trescruces.com.uy

The Montevideo airport is outside the city in the direction of Punta del Este. Regularly scheduled buses run from the Montevideo airport to downtown Punta del Este every half hour to 45 minutes. The trip takes 90 minutes and costs about U$S 10. So definitely save the air fare and fly into Montevideo. You might want to reserve the bus on line, for that time of year. The web site is trescruces.com.uy.

You can fly from Punta del Este to BA in one hour, but it is expensive. There's also a bus+ferry to BA, but that takes 5-6 hours total. You can take the local bus back to the Montevideo airport and fly from there to BA, and save some money, but add time. The only reasonable way to get to Rio from Punta del Este is to fly, also very expensive. There's no train, and the bus would take a full day.

Punta del Este at New Year's has lots of parties, but be prepared: Those that are open to the public are expensive. The best thing is to meet somebody and get invited to a private party at someone's home. That's doable if you get to Punta a couple of days early and frequent the popular beaches (most of which are up the coast from Punta del Este, in La Barra, Manantiales, or Jose Ignacio, three tiny places where lots of the social activity takes place and where the better restaurants are located).
