One day in Punta del Este on Feb. 12 - José Ignacio?

Hello!

We are in Punta for one day (9am to 6pm) on a cruise ship on Friday, Feb 12. Friends recommended that we have to go to José Ignacio for a nice day at the beach and lunch at Parador La Huella or at some other place there.

The question ist what's the best way to get there? How much would a taxi be and is there a chance at all to get a taxi back? Should we rent a car for that day? Are there rental car offices near the beach in Punta and is it an easy drive? Or is there a reliable bus connection?

Thanks in advance!! Looking forward to coming to Punta del Este!!

Your friends' recommendation is a good one. Eating at La Huella (not "or some other place") is the #1 "must-do, don't miss" thing to do in the entire Punta del Este area. It's been open about 13 years and remains the best beach restaurant in the world -- that's by near universal acclaim among international chefs, every time there's a poll. In the last annual review by Restaurant Magazine (out of London) of the 50 Best Latin American restaurants, it was rated #17, with the others being fancy places in big cities like Rio or Buenos Aires or Lima (except for one more in Punta del Este, named La Bourgogne, which is super, super expensive but also a possibility for lunch in February, if La Huella is too far for you). La Huella is also where the beautiful people go to eat straight from the beach, so it's a prime people-watching venue.

It's an easy drive to Jose Ignacio, right along the coast, so renting a car would be best. There are few car rental agencies in Punta, but this is the kind of thing your ship's concierge is for: He or she should be able to find a car for you and have it waiting for you when you dock. Otherwise, finding a car on your own might be difficult, although by mid-February the crowds will have gone so you might be able to do so.

You should also have your concierge make lunch reservations for you at La Huella. La Huella is full every day, and although they leave tables unreserved fro walkups, there can be a long wait and you will be on a tight schedule.

Taxis are expensive, and it's 40 kilometers or so from the port to Jose Ignacio. I'd be guessing but would say U$S 75 each way at least. Maybe someone else knows better; we have a car so don't use taxis. If you take a taxi out you can arrange at that time for one to bring you back. (Ask whether the taxis charge twice for each trip, i.e., do they charge you for their "empty" trip out or back. I've heard conflicting reports on that.)

There are buses from a terminal not too far from the places your ship's tenders might dock, but you would waste a little time walking to/from that terminal. And the bus trip can be long, since it makes stops. It could be nerve-wracking if your ship leaves at 6 p.m. and you have to be on board half an hour or an hour before that.

Get a life....walk about eat in Punta & enjoy the view of the bay & island.& beach.....La huella just a beach restaurant, rare here, but plentiful in Europe, Aus & USA. Chill, no need to go far from dry land for good view and food.
