Cold and windy. It's winter in the southern hemisphere. Temps at around 5-10 celsius. Not a good time of the year to visit a seaside resort like Punta del Este. Save it for a time when you can come in Dec-Feb.
I stayed overnight in Punta del Este in early August 2014. It was indeed cold and windy, and the city was completely dead. On top of it being low-season, it was a holiday weekend. Almost everything was closed and we had trouble finding a restaurant for dinner. The upside was that our accommodation was incredibly cheap.
Thank you both. I think we'll rather go there in the warm season.
