What is required to be served alcohol at a restaurant..

We will be traveling to Bogota soon with our daughter and her husband. We assume they will be carded when ordering any alcohol. What is best to use as an ID...they are a bit worried about keeping their passports on them all the time...is it required?

In Colombia you must carry a document with photographic identity at all times. Colombian residents all carry an identity card (cedula.)

While travelling it is best to leave your passport in a safe place in the hotel and carry a photocopy.

It is very unlikely that there will be an age check in a restaurant; it is left to the adults to control what the youngsters can drink.

If you are going to bars or discos, the doorkeepers will check ages and frisk you for weapons.

As above; do not carry your passport. Take your licence and, if you want, a copy of your passport and entry stamp page.

Photocopies are used all the time in Colombia and you will find a copier in corner shores and kiosks all over the town, even at night. Ask for colour copies which look more authentic.

Carded - haha - whats that? I used to send my 12 year old daughter(then) to the corner store to buy me a beer, never a problem as long as she had the money - drinking age is 18 - unless the your kids look younger than they are I doubt anyone will card them - if you go to a club - many check everyone's ID - but the little corner bars are much more lenient - if you have the dinero and can see over the countertop - they would probably serve you.

The copy advice above is correct - but I will bet you no one asks to see their ID to determine their age.

Colombian laws prohibit the consumption of any alcoholic beverage to people below 18 yrs old. But this is Colombia. IDs are often requested in party bars and discotheques. As CDY said, the mom and pop bar at the corner will not care much.

Don't drink in the street, recent regulations now prohibit drinking alcohol in public places and it seems police received instructions to enforce this new regulation.

Regarding having a copy of your passport, remember it is a convenience police forces usually accept, but the law says you must have your passport with you. Get both data page and the Colombian entry stamp page copies with you.

Take a photo of it on your mobile phone to present if you are asked. Keep the originals at hotel.
