Itinerary to visit the DSWT elephants

I recently returned from Tanzania and would like to return to Africa but this time focus on my huge interest in elephants and the orphans at the Sheldrick trust. I also would like to see Wild ellies in Amboseli. I have received the following proposed tinerary.

3 nights Ithumba camp

2 nights Voi Wildlife lodge

2 nights Umani Springs

2 nights Amboseli Sopa lodge

2 nights Nairobi Sarova Panafric hotel

I foster ellies Kamok, Lemoyian and Murit now. I am looking at june 2016 which is far off but I heard the camp books well in advance. By then Lemoyian may be in Tsavo. I would probably add fosters so I had at least 1 in each stop. I know booking entire camp is required. Can those who stayed at Ithumba and more so Umani Springs share experience? I don't see as many reviews on that location as ithumba.

Any thoughts on this proposed itinerary? I know its unusually elephant heavy but that is my focus versus regular safari this time. Those who have booked ithumba or Umani and used an operator did you let them take care of everything? Or are there things that I will need to do myself?

I booked with All Seasons Safaris, I worked with Alex. They were recommended by a couple other TA members who used them. I did contact three different companies for quotes. one was quite a bit more and did not include Umani springs in the higher price and another operator wasn't familar with the trust other locations except Ithumba. That company could only quote transportation only.

I ended up changing the Amboseli Sopa to Ol tukai lodge and moved the Nairobi nights in beginning.

Just back from three of your chosen haunts Kim.

Liked Voi Wildlife Lodge despite its 430 bed size and adjacent Camp. This was mainly because of low numbers the nights we were there as if crowded if would be busy.

We had Ellies at the Waterhole for no park fees at all. Be advised that Tsavo Fees are $75 pppd, more at Amboseli. Plus the car and driver adds in more.

Ithumba was its usual lovely self. We found the on site staff would /could prepare simple meals from our provisions on request although our own cooking was fun. (they did the waiting and washing up).

The Ellies there are really amazing.

Umani was 'green' and lovely. the small ellie unit is working up from the current 5 orphans and local wild ones are more relaxed. Cooking there is strictly the province of the resident cook and staff from your own ingredients. Buy local stuff from the roadside. We did.

Thank you for update. I was wondering if you were back and how it went How was All Seasons for you this time? It sounds like I will not need all seasons to send a cook with me. Are there a lot of biting insects at Umani?

Did Lualeni stop in to visit while you were there? I wondered if my foster Lemoyian had been moved yet from the nursery, I last read in the updates he was in training to get into the moving truck. Were you able to see that new baby Ex orphan Emily had in person?

Hi Kim,

I will PM with the 'personal stuff'. There are insects everywhere in Africa. We heard rumours of Tsetse but never found any at Umani.

Lualeni held off til my last day but then came to say hello and goodbye with a snort and Ellie Hug.

Emily is at Voi so we have never met.
