Brilliant mind dump of what a day in the Mara is like! – I'm sure a lot of people will read that and get the picture As FL says, Kruger it ain't, nor really anything much like people might imagine from the notion of a park or reserve familiar in Europe or US. Remember folks, there are no fences (well, just the odd one at certain parks, Nakuru and Aberdare are fenced in), so the *park* or *reserve* is really just an idea, marked on a map. And there are virtually facilities inside park or reserve boundaries, that aren't within the compound of camps or lodges.

Incidentally, you can indeed visit other lodges and camps, and there's nothing to stop you pausing for half an hour, having a drink and a rest break and watching the waterhole, or the river, or whatever the place has to offier. Very few camps or lodges would turn away non-guests (the exclusive, small , tented places wouldn't cope very well, but mainstream ones are always welcoming, they love a bit of extra cash and some new tippers!).

Hi all thank you so much for the tips its good to get ideas when you have not been some where and its really interesting to hear that the camps are happy to let you pop in as we are planning a trip next year so wanted to check out some other camps as this year we are staying at

Riverside

Keekorok

Serena

we have seen the govenors on TV and heard so many good things we wondered if they would show us round so we can see what its like. Thanks again only a few days to go before we are off.

The managers at the Governors camps are generally very welcoming and cordial. I'm sure if your driver stopped off at one of them (Little Governors is on the Serena side whilst Main, Il Moran and Private are on the Keekorok side), they would be happy to show you around. My personal favourite is Little Governors, with the tents set around a large marsh teeming with wildlife and birds. Your best bet would probably be to stop in at the beginning of a set game drive time, before the managers go for a break, at around 4pm.
