China Visa Walkthrough - Ottawa, Canada.

Just came back from the Chinese Visa office in Ottawa, and here is a brief walk-through of the experience.

I brought with me a completed application (done on line, and printed out, at home), confirmation of my hotel booking (from Expedia), a letter of confirmation of reservation from the Beijing hotel, my confirmed airline booking, and a passport with a minimum of 3 months validity AFTER your Visa allowance ends.

1. The Visa office is on the 14th floor (220 Laurier W), exit left from the elevator, it is at the end of the hall, on your right.

2. From the little machine at the door, get a ticket by pressing the button appropriate to your reason for going to the office, and collect your number.

3. Proceed to the waiting room and wait for your ticket number to come up on the LED screens over one of the service kiosks.

4. Hand in your document to be reviewed, then, if all is acceptable, take the receipt which shows when your Passport/Visa will be ready for pick-up. Don't lose it!

>The Visa reviewer (contrary to some previous statements on TA) preferred my Expedia booking documents over the actual hotel letter, as it proved payment was made, not just a reservation.

>There is a computer with net access available should you need it (as well as a printer and photo-copier).

How long did you have to wait?

Did you book an appointment through this website?

visaforchina.org/web/…

My parents just went through the visa process the other day in Ottawa and they booked an appointment and said the wait wasn't too long. I booked an appointment for the Vancouver office and hope it's quick.

No appointment, I waited for about 5 minutes.

This was at the Visa office, not the embassy, which is free, but (the embassy) only takes 5 appointments a day...and is very booked up, at least here in Canada/Ottawa.

Did you not have to bring a photo?

We mailed our visa applications to a service in Vancouver and they really gave us a hard time about the photos. Re-sent new photos and she was still complaining because there was variation in the white background--one was a vanilla white and one was a grey type white.

Maybe in person you don't need a photo? Just curious.

Went through the process at the Visa office in Vancouver. Contrary to what it says on the consulate website,

…china-consulate.org/eng/visa/Contact/

the visa office is actually at 250-999 W Broadway.

Did the online appointment thing and was in and out in less than 15 minutes.

As per fees here in Toronto:

$50 for Single Entry visa;

$30 for Service Charge for regular service by the Visa Centre;

$3.90 HST (5% Fed and 8% Ont) on the Service Charge.

The first two charges should be the same in BC, and you will probably get charged at least the 5% Fed GST.

yeah... not free. Also, you have to leave your passport with them so they can afix the visa into it.
