Bucharest & where???

Hubby and I are flying to Bucharest on 23/24th Dec 2018, hope to spend new year in Bucharest. Would be grateful for any suggestions as to where to stay for the first 5 or 6 nights before returning to Bucharest for the New Year. Would be taking public transport eg train or bus. Thank you

The answer to this is actually pretty straightforward. You should absolutely head north by train towards the city of Brasov.

There are two options: if you want to make the most out of these few days, you should organize them something like 2 or 3 days in the city of Brasov and 2 or 3 days in the city of Sibiu. These are basically the two main tourist destinations in central Romania and there are plenty of things to see in and around both of them.

Example itinerary:

Day 1: head out north by train from Bucharest. On the way to Brasov, stop in the mountain resort of Sinaia to see the awesome Peles Castle (closed Mondays). Reach Brasov in the afternoon.

Day 2: take a daytrip to the nearby valley around the towns of Rasnov, Bran and Zarnesti. Here you can see one or two of the following: Bran Castle (marketed as Dracula's Castle), Rasnov Citadel, Zarnesti Bear Sanctuary, the "Cheile Zarnestilor" Gorge.

Day 3: daytrip to the Medieval city of Sighisoara

Day 4: Take the train in the morning to Sibiu, see the Medieval City Center.

Days 5 and 6: Several possible daytrips: Transfagarasan high-altitude mountain road, Astra Outdoor Village Museum, Corvin Castle in Hunedoara, traditional villages in "Marginimea Sibiului" area, 15th Century Saxon Fortified Church in Biertan, take your pick

At the end, take the overnight train back to Bucharest.

Now, granted, this is the most intense and packed trip imaginable, so if you want to take it slightly easier, you can just give up on Sibiu and just spend, say, one or two days in the mountain resorts of Sinaia and Busteni and then 3 or 4 days in Brasov. In this case you would probably have time for some more sights like the Cable Car to the high plateau in Busteni, or the Prejmer / Harman / Viscri fortified churches around Brasov. And this would all keep you closer to Bucharest so a long overnight return trip would no longer be necessary.

Having said all of that, be careful to reserve accomodation and transport early, Romanians take their winter holidays very seriously and every accommodation in the area is likely to be booked at least one or two months in advance.
