one day stop in Panama

Cruise ship stops in Panama City

Our cruise ship stops in Panama Feb 12, 2012, 5AM-3PM. We're a party of 2 - both retired. Would like to arrange a private or small tour of the area's highlights. Can you recommend: 1. Not-to-miss sites; and 2. Tour provider that can do a great job of showing us around? Thanks!

Honestly, you don't need to go to the expense of hiring a tour guide. Sleep in 'til the morning rush has lessened and the places of interest are open. Then, take a taxi to Miraflores locks. That's just up the same road. You can easily spend a couple of hours there, going through the museum and watching a ship or two go through the locks.

By then, it's almost lunch time. The buffet lunch at the restaurant is nice, and if you're arriving early enough you can get a table with a good view of the locks.

If you decide to have lunch in the city, have a taxi take you from Miraflores to El Trapiche for a taste of Panamanian cuisine. Some people say Panamanian food is bland. I find it subtly interesting. Try ceviche -- it's anything but bland.

After lunch, get another taxi and the driver take you to Casco Viejo -- the older part of Panama. Interesting architecture. (Reminds me of New Orleans' French Quarter.) Take a walk around the square. Then, taxi back to the boat.

Roberto in Colon is your man to contact: I am also going to suggest him for DE for Colon area.

robtads2@hotmail.com He operates a a family owned tour company with very nice large air conditioned vans in Colon. Roberto is very personable, knowledgable and reasonably priced. Perhaps he could include a pick up along with customized tours for you and your group. A great tour giver who demonstrates such knowledge, passion and love for his country.

I am sure you would all have a great time.

Give him time to respond.............unfortunately Panama is known for slow answering to e-mails and this is the tourist "high" season right now, so all tour givers are very busy this time of year. Good luck.
