Going to Fiji / Koro Sun - What do you recommend to pack?

Hello... traveling to Fiji / Savusavu / Koro Sun and was looking for a recommended packing list and was hoping to get advise from fellow travelers... Here is the start of an initial list are some of questions:

* electric plug adaptors? what is the electrical standard - do the hotels have convertors or do we need to buy

* water shoes

* bug spray

* dvds - heard there are tv/dvd players but limited library

* tip/barter items??? i read someone recommending liquer, real mayo, etc. to tip/barter with locals - just sounds a bit of a hassle and corny, but wanted to get others opinions/validation

* cash / conversion --- us dollars ---- do we need to truly convert to fiji dollar or are they like some other countries that they prefer us dollars

* food for hotel --- some said the granula bars are expensive and to bring your own, etc..

thanks for your time

=)

Hi live2,

You will need an adapter angled for Australia for charging camera, laptop batteries etc. Take bug spray, if not supplied by the resort. Will be pricey should you have to purchase it at the resort. The following link has suggested items to take with you. Click on the link in #12 for what not to take.

Take water shoes as there may be coral on the beach.

DVD's from the states will not play dvd players in Fiji. Fiji is region 9 the US is region 1. We take our laptop with downloaded music and a few dvd's. Also allows us to download our pictures every day.

Have not heard of bartering and would not recommend it. Liquor would be out of the question.

Tipping is discouraged and not recommended in Fiji. Most resort have a Christmas fund you can contribute to, if you chose. The money collected during the year is divided equally between all the staff. The following link has additional information on tipping.

You will need to convert from USD to FD. We exchange money at the Western Union Exchange booth at the airport in Nadi. It is located near the baggage claim area. Find we get a better rate than at LAX.

You can take snacks....chips, crackers, etc. Be sure you declare all food items you take with you.

Hope this helps.

Koro Sun is lovely. Great ressort amnd wonderful staff with good food and some great tour to take. We went to the Saltwater Lake, kayaking up with the tide and comind down with it. Went on an amazing trip to a waterfall in the middle of the jungle, were driven part of the way and then hiked the resort. The dip in the falls was so refreshing, lunch afterwards in the home of a local Fijian lady, delicious.. .... We had plenty to eat without the need for snacks. Everything was charged to our room. Went into Savusavu small town very interesting. Visit the Hot Springs! The Copra Shed and Yacht club are the places to go for food. Have found that people think snacks are expensive because they forget to convert the Fiji dollar to their own currency, do that and they are about the same price.

thank you so much for the good and help info and links!!!

agree about barter and liquer... however, i did read about the school tour and that someone brought a care package. i thought that was an absolutely great idea and bought a big tote and filled it with LOTS of fun and practical items for the school. ---- just now need to get a bigger suit case LOL!

You are very welcome. Glad to help.

We alway take a care package, purchase souvenirs at the village/school, and sometimes make a donation. Anything you take will be greatly appreciated.

Because diabetes is on the rise in Fiji, and dental care hard to come by, I would not take take candy. Have seen posts where it was suggested. Much better to take toothbrushes.

Safe travels. Am sure you will have a fabulous vacation in Fiji.

Just casual clothes are fine to take, maybe a sundress for dinner or sarong and nice T shirt.
