Good Luck.
Pamela.
We just visited Rinca Island adjacent to Komodo. Rinca is a 2h boat ride from Labuanbajo, Komodo is 4h. The visit was easy in a day - organised through Gertudis travel - you will find on the main drag to the right of the gardenia hotel. Price was 750,000rupiah for the boat, lunch and collection from the hotel. Additional costs are US$15 + about 50,000 rupiah per person for various fees at the park itself. This fee would have covered visit to komodo Island as well. Many other agents and all the hotels would offer such trips - prices quoted varied from 500,000 to 1,000,000rupiah - and so too do the size of boat. If the sea is rough do not get on a small boat.
I enjoyed the visit - my wife felt that the Komodo drangons were slightly underwhelming - I guess she would only have felt it was value for money if she had been chased by one!
Rauby,

This made me laugh so much-sounds like your wife is into REAL adventure for her dollar.
Thanks for sharing with all that wonderful information.
That area is still on my 'must see' list.
Pamela.
Thank you everyone, I plan my visit to Komodo Soon on May this year! sounds like Rinca Island interesting, cause i hear from friends there is Deer in this Island! just such a cool if I could met the baby deers!
Just to give some precisions here, there are 2 Komodo reserves there: Rinca island (2 hours by boat) which is the closest one to the Labuan bajo and Komodo island itself (4 hours by boat).
I went to Rinca and enjoy the track with a nice ranger. Be careful of the "lalat kuda" some kind of flies that chases you into your boat. They are unharmful but it is unplaisant.
Komodo totally exceeded our expectations...we had one day on a cruise ship and had wanted to snorkel and instead they insisted we all stay aboard or see the dragons...The guides on Komodo were informative, the island much prettier than we expected, and the dragons were very cool beasts...Yes, they did hang a goat in a tree for them to eat which might disgust some...They take you on a short hike and tell tales and you can see wild deer, boar, etc...One fat dragon never leaves the underneath of the ranger area, but otherwise some passengers were chased, we were not, but we saw a half dozen of the guys and it was very fun ....
We are visiting Komodo Island on a Costa Cruise ship. Can one arrange their own tour at the Ranger Station, or does one have to take the ship's tour to get off the ship?
great info.
i not sure that i'll get to komodo as i have a number of destinations but the info was clear and precise. hopefully i will
agree that the underwhelm post was very funny.
