30s mom + 2 college kids

My kids and I are heading to Fukuoka end of July for 5 days. Just a few questions-

1. Is there a lot to do in Fukuoka? Meaning can the 5 days just be consumed in that area alone? Day 1 will be a whole day affair in Dazaifu.

2. Originally we wanted to go to Hiroshima for the day but due to the recent floods we may need to tweak the itinerary. Kagoshima sounds like a great day trip alternative. Do you recommend it?

3. What’s in Kyushu?

4. We were thinking (hesitantly) about heading to Kobe for a meal (Kobe beef). Do you recommend we take the trip or to just look up a nice steak place in Fukuoka.

5. Are the yatais worth a trip? I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews and would appreciate some feedback.

Pls feel free to make recommendations. None of us have been there and we would appreciate suggestions.

Thank you. :)

Hiroshima would be a great side trip. As a second choice, Kagoshima would also be great.

In Kagoshima, I would recommend the Museum of the Meiji Restoration, particularly their film about the Satsuma students who illegally travelled to Britain to learn about Western technology. The Senganen garden is a top attraction.

If you're interested in ceramics, Arita is great for shopping and its ceramics museum.

You could spend days shopping at Hakata station and Canal City.

Nokonoshima Island Park and Uminonakamichi Seaside Park are one day trip destinations from the city centre of Fukuoka. Marine World Aquarium can be included when you visit the latter park.

Kagoshima, Hiroshima, and Kumamoto are possible for a day trip by Shinkansen train. Nagasaki can be done by limited express and expressway bus. Kukura, Mojiko, and Shimonoseki can be done by local train and Kanmon Ferry.

If you hire a car, there're more places to add, Yobuko in Karatsu, Kuju/Aso, etc. in Kyushu.

Yatai is a sort of food attractions rather than restaurant experience.

Here are some ideas for other places in Kyushu, although you can spend the whole time in Fukuoka. As you have college-age children, let them do the Internet research.

Nagasaki City - Atomic Bomb Museum, Dejima, Glover Garden, 26 Martyrs Museum

Sasebo - Huis Ten Bosch

Kumamoto City - Kumamoto Castle

Kagoshima City - Sakurajima Visitors Center, Senganen Castle and Gardens, Museum of the Meiji Restoration, Saigo Takamori's hideout

Beppu - Seven Hot Spring hells, Takasakiyama monkey park, Jigokumushikobo Kannawa, Kannawa town walk, Takegawara sand bath

Fukuoka City - Tenjin covered shopping street, Nakasu Kawabata covered shopping street, various Zen temples, Fukuoka Tower area museums, Canal City shopping centre (often has exhibits or performances)
