Lunch at Jalan Petaling

So I plan on being in Jalan Petaling around lunchtime, and I'd like to grab a bite there. What are some popular or well-known restaurants that are must-dat in Jalan Petaling? Any lunch, snack, or drink recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

If you are talking about lunch time TODAY i.e 23 Nov 2015, then just look out for stalls with lots of local sitting down eating.

As above, if you want hawker food, just look at places with crowds, then go for it.

If you want proper restaurants or cafes, the following come to mind:

1) Old China Cafe - for Peranakan food.

2) Merchant's Lane - quirky cafe located in a former brothel.

3) Peter Hoe Beyond - cafe located in a home decor shop.

Watermice,

Oops, I should've clarified. I didn't mean today, but when I travel to KL in about a month.

Jadamros,

I'll check out the hawker foods and see which ones have the longest line. I saw you use the word 'Peranakan,' and I've never seen that term before, so I Googled it. So what's the difference between Peranakan food and Chinese or Malaysian food?

LizinKL,

Thanks for another vote for Old China Cafe.

Thanks. I just want to make sure I don't miss any go-to spots that are hidden.

Peranakan food, also known as Nyonya food; is the cuisine of the Straits Chinese or Peranakans.

They are the descendants of early chinese migrants who came to the peninsula especially to Penang, Melaka and Singapore, intermarried and adopted influences from the local Malays into their Chinese food and culture.

The above link would be useful, pls read it. DE Esorlegin did a great job putting up a list of typical and famous Malaysian food. You will find Malays, Chinese and Indian style of cooking here.

If you cant get to this link, then use the search function, search "Food Descriptions" in the Penang forum, the post was from January 2011.

Hope you wont travel half way across the globe to try McDonalds here....

You wont be able to eat / try all the food listed....but you should try as much as you can.

Jadamros,

Thanks for the explanation. So I should expect Peranakan food to be a fusion of Chinese and Malay food, correct?

WaterMice,

Thanks for the link. Wow, that post has a ton of food descriptions! I'll be sure to try these during my visit to KL.
