Possibe to visit solo vs. tour

Instead of paying for a tour...does anyone know how easy it is to take the public bus to the falls? I will be staying in a nearby hostel...and what is the entrance fee in USD? I've seen anywhere from $14-20. Thanks. What time does the park close?

The difference in fees is perhaps due to outdated sites and/or the exchange rate.

It is quite easy to take the bus to both sides of the park. then you just walk and take photos. Bus runs from Foz do Iguacu in Brazil to the entrance of the Brazil park. Same in Argentina from Puerto Iguazu. There is also a bus that crosses the border from one town to the other.

The Bird Park and the boat ride under the falls are also fun.

very easy to take public bus to falls. i did it to both sides last week.

For Brazilian side, bus 120 goes there from town (your hostel can tell you where closest bus stop is to you). cost 2.65 Reals and the falls are the last stop.

Cost 41.5 Reals to enter the park

For Argentinian side, buses saying Puerto Iguacu, Argentina will take you through to the Argentine bus park (last stop), this is 4 Reals and they will give you a ticket as if you need to stop at Brazilian immigration this can take a while and you may need to catch next bus which will be free if you show your ticket, at Argentine immigration only takes a couple of minutes and bus waits for you, then you walk a few metres along to catch the Cataratas bus to the falls which goes every 20 minutes. this is 10 Argentine pesos each way. cost to get into Argentine falls is 100 Pesos and must be paid in Pesos, not other currency. enjoy your trip!
