PTY to David

Going to Panama in April.. Looking to explore David and surrounding areas (rental car). After reading countless forums it looks like the best and easiest way is to fly from PTY to DAV and then rent a car. Has anyone driven to Bocas frpm David? looking for advise on logistics and safety of the drive. Thanks in advance....

It is a beautiful drive and in the day it is relatively safe in the day time. However, you dont need to drive to Bocas as you probably wont be driving your car once you get there and if you do take a car you will have to return it to David. The bus from David to Almirante (bocas) takes around 4 hours.

Not sure why you would want to explore David--the most interesting places in that province (Cerro Punta/Volcan, Boquete, Boca Chica, Coiba) are at least 90 minutes away from David, which itself doesn't much to offer tourists.

It is great to have a car while in David, it makes it alot easier to explore the mountain towns.

I'm kinda curious, al1tech ... what exactly are you wanting to explore in and around David? I'm not really impressed with David, but David and Chiriquí are to Panamá what Dallas and Texas are to the U.S. Especially when it comes to BIG egos.

Anyway, I've found that when you're wanting to get around Chiriquí, it's just like getting around Texas ... it's best when you have your own means of transportation. So, whether you're going to Cerro Punta, Boquete or Boca Chica, you'll be a lot more comfortable and have a lot more freedom with a rental car.

As for going to Bocas .. that might be another story. Coming over the Corderilla and seeing the islands in the turquoise sea is breathtaking. The road are safe, during the day. You need ot plan your trip to arrive in Almirante before 6 PM so you can get to Bocas del Toro the same day. You do not want to drive that road at night, and you do not want to spend the night in Almirante. For planning, figure that it's going to take you at least 4 hours to get to Almirante from Davidl.
