activities without a guide in arenal/la fortuna

staying at leaves and lizzards....looking for fun things to do and see with 2 teens (hiking to see animals, hotsprings, boating) but dont necessarily want a guide or pay a great deal of money. we have a car and can getb wherever we want to go. just not sure where one can explore on their own vs. paying for a "tour". thanks!!

Your best bet is to look right here on Tripadvisor. If you go to the Costa Rica main page, it will have a list of things to do. They are in order of the most popular to least. You can read alot of the trip reports here and see what others found to be fun and reasonablely priced. In Costa Rica you don't need a guide for anything, a little research will be all you need. There are several places to zipline, a couple of businesses offering various boating, whether it be rafts, canoes or kayaks. You can hike on your own to the La Fortuna waterfall, Ecoglide offer access to their hiking trails for a fee, as does the Arenal Observation Lodge, which has beautiful grounds and a tons of trails to hike on...as easy or hard as you choose. Can't tell you much about the hotsprings..not my cup of tea. Have a Great trip..I'm going back in June.

A couple of other things you can do -- boat trip at Cano Negro, day trip to Tenorio National Park for the hike to the Rio Celeste and a visit to the Guatuso indigenous village.

I agree - you don't need a guide for anything, really, or an organized tour. Pick what you want to do and just go there.

You can also drive to the Fortuna Waterfall or to the Arenal Volcano national park and just pay the entrance fee there as well. Same thing for hot springs just drive there (some you might need to prebook) and pay the entrance fee.

As stated the Fortuna Waterfall can be done on your own for 10 per person. You can swim by the waterfall. We also did the Cerro Chato volcano hike on our own. The trail is close by the Waterfall. It is a well marked hike in the rainforest. It is steep. At the top you can see Arenal volcano if it is not covered in clouds (it was the day we went). Walk 100 meters more down a steep path to the green lagoon. It is also a $10 entrance fee. It took us about 4 hours. There are several places for hot springs - Los Logas is $15 pp (I read that if you do their zip line you can use their hot springs after for free), a new place with two pools next to Baldi is $13, and the locals pool across the street from Los Logas is $10. We tested the water at several and it just wasn't hot enough for us. There is a river where the locals go for free I think somewhere by Tabacon but not sure. We did the zipline with Ecoglide for $45 pp and it was very good. Sodas are good - $5 for the typical CR meal. With teens I'd be sure to pack extra snacks in your luggage - granola bars, trail mix, crackers, licorice etc. The grocery stores do have some US products but they are a little pricey.

Just came back from our trip with three teenaged daughters. Definitely recommend the La Fortuna waterfall, walking the trails near the volcano, and as a splurge go canyoneering with Desafio (we did) or Pure Trek (the other company). It was well-worth the cost and LOTS of fun.
