Tica Bus Terminal

Where would you recommend to stay close to the Tica Bus Terminal in San Jose? We are leaving on a 6am bus to Nicaragua and are looking for someplace to stay the night before. Would prefer to spend between $40 and $70, but would like a place that is clean and safe.

Another option would be to stay farther away from the terminal and take a taxi in the morning. Would consider this if the area around the terminal is not so pleasant.

I've also seen the terminal in two different locations on maps. Please confirm the current terminal location.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Cacts hotel is near there

We have stayed there quite a few times over the years and have walked to restaurants and bus stations in the evening and in the morning. However, in general though, it doesn't get light much before 5.30 AM and you might not feel comfortable walking around in an area you are not familiar with. So taking a taxi from wherever you stay would be a good idea.

I agree with Racquel regarding taking a taxi. The streets will be essentially completely deserted at that hour but it will still be dark. Plus, while that area is certainly not the roughest area that SJ has to offer, it is still "urban", so walking even a relatively short distance in such unfamiliar areas (especially with all your luggage or backpacks) will probably be something you'll prefer to avoid. Besides, its not like you'll really on a backpacker budget if you're looking for a $40-70 hotel room and so spending the extra couple of bucks for a cab to take you door to door is really a very minor thing.

So my answer to questions like these is to not focus AT ALL on how close your hotel is to something else so much as just picking out the hotel you really like. The downtown area is so small that whatever isn't a short walk away is never more than a $2 cab ride away and which, especially with lack of traffic at the hour you're talking about, won't take you any longer to drive. What difference does it even really make if you're a free 5 minute walk from wherever you want to go or a 2-5 minute $1-2 cab ride. There will probably bigger differences in costs (and desirability) between your various hotel options anyway.

As for your question about the apparent 2 Ticabus locations. This is a common source of confusion for many people. As others have already said the main (and only) Ticabus terminal is on Avenida 3 near Calle 26. The other location that you see on some maps (on Calle 9 near the Soledad Church) is just a TICKET office. But that might still be someplace useful to know about if you'll be purchasing your tickets the day before as it is a lot closer to other hotels and tourist attractions that you might wish to stay at or visit any way, possibly saving you an extra cab trip to the Paseo Colon area to pre-purchase your tickets.
