We are going to be at the Manihi Pearl in late March, and are avid snorkelers (have been to Malaysia, Aitutaki, Mayan Riviera, Indonesia, Barbados, Cuba, etc).

We are wondering how this will rate. In Aitutaki the lagoon doesn't have openings to open ocean so there were no issues with sharks or anything... and a reasonable variety of smaller fish.

Has anyone done the "shooting the pass" snorkeling in Manihi? It sounds very interesting but slightly scary. Is the current bringing you into the lagoon or shooting you into open ocean? What sort of stuff do you see on the coral wall, etc.

Unfortunately the person was away who guided that trip when we did our vacation, but it does sound pretty cool!

We just did the motu picnic and got to play around in the water with a bunch of black tip sharks (maybe between 3-6 feet long). It was surprisingly unscary.
