Trip to Grand Canyon

Trip to Grand Canyon

Hello, we're flying into Pheonix next week for a quick vacation with 2 teenagers. We're driving up to Grand Canyon and staying there for one night. Then we're booked for 2 days in Williams, AZ. We're thinking to drive to Sedona for one day, then we have another day to fill. We were thinking to visit the Wupatki NM, perhaps drive through the Navajo reservation, but I don't know what makes sense in terms of what's on the way where. We live in New England, so the whole experience of Arizona is new to my kids. Scenic routes, Indian reservations, historical sites, unique places are all welcome. I'll appreciate any recommendations.

So you have your lodging booked at Grand Canyon National Park, before the two nights at Williams? And how much time after that?

Driving up to GC Wednesday morning, staying there overnight and most of Thursday. Driving down to Williams Thursday night, staying there through Sunday morning.

Not sure what you are expecting from a drive thru of a Navajo reservation. The resercation is not a tourist stop. In most cases, the drive is thru barrren desert with maybe a few small homes scattered about. Occasionally, you might come across a roadside stand where jewelry and other items are sold.

Not sure why you are staying in Williams at all?

Anyway, did not indicate when your flight arrive at PHX Airport - afternoon or evening?

There are many historical and geological sites to behold on a trip from PHX to the Grand Canyon. Here are a few:

From PHX to the Grand Canyon:

Montezuma well

Montezuma castle

Walnut Canyon National Monument

Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments

Scenic Drive:

Williams to Sedona 89A - Oak Creek Canyon

Nature and Wildlife:

Bearizona in Williams

At the Grand Canyon when you enter go the the Mather Point Visitor Center to see Ranger activities for the day (your kids are probably too old for Jr Ranger)

Again, why stay in Williams? You should stay the 2 nights in Sedona. If you can change your accommodations. That way, you will be much closer to PHX Airport on your departure date.

Thank you SwimFan2012 - good question! You made me realize that indeed staying in Williams doesn't make much sense. So we'll drive from Phoenix to Sedona on Wednesday morning (we're staying in Phoenix Tuesday night), stay in Sedona 2 nights, drive to Grand Canyon on Friday morning and stay there through Sunday. This order worked out better with hotel availability. We don't fly out until Sunday night, so the drive back to Phoenix on Sunday will be fine. Similar suggestions? I see that many of the attractions you mentioned are still on our way.

Give Sedona the weight of your time. 3 nights there and 1 at Grand Canyon National Park will be consistent with what most travelers wish they had done after their trips to both places. As you said, you don’t know what to expect. So you should trust us.

Good advice so far.

The teens will enjoy the Island Trail at Walnut Canyon far more than Montezuma's Castle. Montezuma's is fine if you have mobility or other issues but nothing beats walking through the cliff dwellings - so much more hands on than viewing the dwellings from a distance. It is usually very popular with the teens that visit us.
