Do Not do the "package" with a coach tour!! You will spend your entire day riding through uneventful landscape, and have only about 20-30 minutes to actually SEE the Grand Canyon. There are 2 - 20 min. stops at the Canyon. By the time everyone gets off, you walk to where you can see anything, quickly shoot a few pictures it's time to get back on the coach. The train ride is comfortable, relaxing but NO Scenery!!

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see that you concur with the advice that has been given here freely for any years. The GCRR does not afford any views of the Grand Canyon, and while consuming lots of time and costing plenty of money, doesn't equate to a good Grand Canyon experience.

I would suggest however, that rather than posting a brief negative statement here in the forum, you should instead write a review about the GCRR and submit it there instead. Your review will have a more lasting impact and will help more visitors to make decisions about what to expect and whether to book, or not.

Thank you, I thought long and hard before posting negativity. But Post "There" where?

Scroll down to Write a Review in the green box. Click on it and follow the steps. Negative is OK, especially if you give details about the experience.

Then come back and tell us about the rest of your vacation. Was it all a bust, or did you have a good time at any point?

Sorry your experience was less than enjoyable RoaminCSarasota. The pitfalls you mention are the most common complaints we hear back about the Grand Canyon Railway: no scenery on the train ride itself, and not much time in the park. Do post a full review as RedRox suggests. As for the rest of you: be sure you do your homework about the GCRy before you commit to it. It's not a scenic trip (since you don't travel along the canyon rim), more of an Old West Historic type of attraction. It can be fun for the right type of person (i.e., train buff, repeat visitor to the Grand Canyon), but you'll enjoy more freedom and flexibility by driving yourself, hands down. Last month we vacationed in Sedona for 4 nights and then took the Train to the Grand canyon. After Sedona I wanted to spend a night in the Canyon which we visited for only 5 hours about 10 years ago but we started planning for this trip in late July and all the rooms in the Canyon were booked. As a last option we checked out the trains website and rooms at the Maswik were still available. We upgraded to the Observation Dome on the train and for a deluxe room in the hotel for the two nights stay. Yes it was expensive but what the hell, we were on vacation and could afford it. It turned out that we really enjoyed the 3 nights of this package especially the overnight stay in the Canyon and even the train ride. But I would not recommend the train ride for the basic package where you depart Williams at 9:30 am and arrive at the canyon depot at 11:45 am and if you take the tour it leaves you only a couple of hours to view the Canyon because the train leaves for Williams at 3:30 pm.
