We are going to Barahona from SD with Caribe tours bus. We want explore the surrounding areas.How can we do it without a car? Does anyone know what are the options? I am fluent in Spanish and not afraid to mix with the locals. Will gua guas be a good option to visit Laguna Oviedo, Los Patos etc.? Are there taxis available at a reasonable day rate?

3 helpful votes Suggest you post on DR1.com as a few of the regulars live near Barahona. Yes, there are guaguas but the locals would know more. Not an area where many tourists go.
From Barahona these places are on route to Perdenales so it is possible. Though not sure how easy it would be to see much of the laguna. I would also recommend getting down to perdenales as the route from olveido to perdenales is through tropical dry forest and spectacular. At perdenales you should be able to organise transport to cabo rojo for a boat to bahia de las agulias one of the best beaches in the DR. (At least until they start building the next punta cana here). A helpful hotel to arrange this in perdenales is doña chava.
