How difficult a drive is it to get to Barahona?
Driving through Santo Domingo and San Cristobal is very hectic and frantic. Once past there it is not bad. Beautiful area and well worth the visit.. Spanish skills or a guide is a must. Happy travels, BfP
Best way is to take a Caribe Tours Bus from Santo Domingo. Comfortable, safe and inexpensive. Baharona is a great unspoiled place to visit.
Easy.
You can take 27 de Febrero Avenue to Plaza de Banderas, there will be an entrance near there for a 4 lane highway that will take you to Bani. Drive through Bani, then the highway begins again (probably two lanes). Next town would be Azua, drive through Azua and again the highway begins, straight on to Barahona. It is a nice ride. Very nice people in Barahona. You will see cows and horses. Very easy to visit Haiti from Pedernales in the Dominican Republic.
Weekends in Santo Domingo are quieter on the roads. Rush hours there are more cars on the road. In the middle part of the day you'll make better time. New overpasses and underpasses have been built in the last few years which increase the flow.
You can also take the Malecon (Avenida George Washington), straight west (it becomes Autopista 30 de Mayo) to Haina (30 peso toll before Haina), then straight into San Cristobal, then through San Cristobal to reach the four lane highway, I posted about in my prior post.
I have posted on youtube part of the drive through San Cristobal, and the highway between San Cristobal and Bani. As well as other videos while driving to Barahona and Pedernales and walking around around in Anse-à-Pitres, Haiti, (town on the other side of the border from Pedernales, Dominican Republic).
You can look at google maps before a trip to get an idea.
