Trip suggestions.

Road trip next week. First day Orange County with overnight at Delta King in old town Sacramento. Second day drive to Dunsmuir with three nights at the Railroad Resort. Then driving to Chester for the last two nights. Would like to visit Mt. Shasta, some waterfalls and Volcano Park. What am I missing? Thank You in advance.

I don't think you're missing anything. From Dunsmuir you can explore the towns of Dunsmuir, McCloud, and Mt. Shasta. They are all very small. Waterfalls nearby include Mossbrae falls, the 3 McCloud River Falls, Burney Falls, and Hedge Creek Falls. Lake Siskiyou is a nice place to take a dip with a spectacular view of Mt. Shasta. There are countless trails to explore. Castle Crags State Park is close and has hikes with amazing views (when it's not smokey from wildfires). The Mt. Shasta ski park has opened lifts for summer hiking and mountain biking up on the mountain. On the way from Dunsmuir to Lassen Volcanic National Park you can stop along Hat Creek and at Subway Caves. Do you have any more specific questions we can help you with?

You may also find it useful to read some of the Mt. Shasta forum posts. Mt. Shasta (the town) is 5 miles north of Dunsmuir and the forum gets more traffic than Dunsmuir.

We drove by Shasta on our way from Oregon on Monday and the air was pretty hazy. There's a number of fires in NoCal but the one most impacting the Shasta area is the Clear Fire near Happy Camp. As of this morning, it's only 10% contained.

Dunsmuir has a good brew pub if you are into those kind of things.
