A week in Gold Country around Jamestown

I'm in the market for a one week family vacation with about 6 extended family members ranging from 23 to 56 years old in the Jamestown and surrounding area. We'd be interested in staying in a single place (cabin or B&B) throughout the week, and then going out daily for area activities, such as horse back riding, fishing (river or lake), hiking, sightseeing, shopping, and, of course, gold panning.

What ideas should we explore as to places to stay and things to do?

Hopefully a local expert will provide more advice, but we were there a few years ago and the big attraction was the nearby town of Columbia which is a state historic park and very well done. Jamestown itself, while historical, does not compare with Columbia, although it does have the historic railroad, but that's about it. In between the Jamestown and Columbia is the larger town of Sonora which also has some historic attractions, but is also a regular town with non tourist activities. We stayed in this place, which is just an ordinary motel, without charm, but we found satisfactory:

Well one place you must go is about 40 minutes from Jamestown and it's Calaveras Big Trees.

About 35 minutes away from Jamestown is Mercer Caverns. Pretty cool place.

A little under 2 hours is Yosemite Valley.

Hang out at Don Pedro Resevior which is pretty close by.

If you want the real gold panning experience, look into the Woods Creek Gold Mining Trip http://www.goldfun.com/. Joshua Vic is an amazing guide as you spend the day panning and sluicing for gold. It's the real thing, digging through the mud by the river and using a sluice to extract the gold. You get to keep all the gold you find. We have gone twice and loved it both times. The scenery is beautiful as well. Be sure to bring a change of clothes and shoes as you get very muddy. Our family had such a great time the 1st time - we went again when we returned to the area.

I completely agree that a trip to the Calveras Big Tree Park http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=551 is a must. The trees are impressive, nice walkways through the 2 groves and very little crowds.

Ironstone winery is a fun tour and they have a nice small gold museum at the end of the tour.

Sutter Gold Mine. Put on your hard hat and ride the tram into the gold mine. Very informative and interesting.
