Grocery

We will be staying at the Best Western in Laguna Beach mid Oct. for 3 nights. We will be landing at LAX , renting a car and would like to pick up some snacks and possibly wine or beer for our room. Is there reasonable price grocery store walking distance ( we don't mind walking ) from our hotel or would you recommend stopping on route if so where ? Also any suggestions for favorite lunch or dinner restaurants within walking distance ? Thanks so much as we are so excited regarding our first trip for a special birthday celebration.

Pavillions or Ralph in Laguna Beacn - just stop prior to checking in and get your goods for the time there.

Have fun.

The Best Western Las Brisas is in the southern part of Laguna Beach. There are certainly some good restaurants in the area like those at the Surf & Sand Hotel and Teemu Selanne's Steak Tavern, but Downtown Laguna Beach is where the best and largest concentration of restaurants are.

Some of the better restaurants in Downtown are 230 Forest Ave, Watermarc, Three Seventy Common, Broadway by Amar Santana and Alessa Cucina, to name a few.

I'd also choose Whole Foods in Downtown over either Pavilions or Ralph's for groceries.

I don't know how "reasonably priced" you'll consider Whole Foods for snacks and wine. But for Ralphs and Pavilions you'll need a member-card (ask the cashier for a guest card) in order to get reasonable prices.

For snacks & beer & wine your best bet is probably stopping enroute at a Trader Joes. If you're planning on driving the coastal road from LAX, there's a Trader Joes in Newport Beach.

The Best Western is only .7 miles south of Ralphs, a one minute drive or 13 minute walk and Pavilions is just one short block further. So no need to stop before you check in to your hotel after a long flight if you don't feel like it. http://tinyurl.com/gr5oop4 . There is also a new Gelsons that just opened 3 miles south. Since it is brand new it's quite a local fascination right now. latimes.com/socal/coastline-pilot/news/tn-cp… Trader Joe's is great but not convenient and it won't have everything you need.

Personally I think that Ralph's is a mess. I avoid it like the plague. They should have torn it down years ago and redone

If you go to Ralphs or Pavilions, just ask the person behind you in line if you can use their Ralphs Club or Vons Club card. It'll save you some money.

Gelsons is extremely expensive. So is Whole Foods, which is why we lampoon it as Whole Paycheque.

While I agree with traveller with regard to normal residential shopping, I still recommend Whole Foods and Gelson's for visitors because of their wonderful prepared food sections. When you are staying in a motel like Best Western and want a quick but really good take out dinner or lunch to enjoy down at the beach or in your room, Gelson's and Whole Foods offer great options that cost far less than restaurants. And if you aren't loading up on a car load of supplies, the extra cost is not that significant. In fact, if you buy Whole Foods own "365" brand items, the cost can be lower than brand items at Ralphs and Pavillions.
