A Day in LA Tour and Santa Monica visit

I have been going back and forth on where to stay and what to see during our visit to LA. Unfortunately, we only have a day to spend in LA as we travel south. I have decided to do the 'A Day in LA Tours - Los Angeles Tours - Hollywood Tours' while we visit. Their website says they will pick you up at your hotel and drop you off anywhere (within reason). They also have a pick up location in Santa Monica and can be dropped of there. I am trying to decide if it makes sense for us to drive from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica and spend the night there after the tour or to drive into downtown and get a hotel downtown.

What would you recommend if we are heading to San Diego the following morning?

Thanks :)

If you're on your way from Santa Barbara to San Diego, staying in Santa Monica makes sense. Santa Monica is a little less than halfway between Santa Barbara and San Diego. Santa Monica is about 100 miles south of Santa Barbara. If you went down to Santa Monica and then back up to Santa Barbara you'd be adding 200 unnecessary miles to your trip.

Santa Monica and downtown LA both have good freeway links to San Diego. Santa Monica is slightly farther than downtown LA from San Diego. Most of the larger hotels in Santa Monica are near the 3rd St. Promenade outdoor shopping center, making their locations much more suited for walking around in the evening to bars / restaurants than most of downtown LA, which (with a few exceptions) can be somewhat dead in the evenings. On the other hand, Santa Monica hotels tend to be more expensive than downtown LA hotels.
