National Geographic is chronicling a journey along Route 66. Sponsored by The National Trust for Historic Preseveration, they are trying to add Route 66 as the 20th National Historic Trail in the U.S.
"The designation would make it eligible for federal funds to promote and upkeep the road and the sites that border it, Trust officials said.
Among the other trails that have won the designation are the Santa Fe and Lewis & Clark Trails."
On August 3, 5-9 pm, the journey ends at Mels Diner, where the airstream motor home will park and you can visit, get some Route 66 swag and hear about the journey.
A note about Mel's. It's a great space, they did wonders with that old Googie style building. However, the food is average to sub-par. Best to stick with burgers and shakes, IMO, dinners were overcooked/underseasoned.
