Day trip from Edwards area?

We are thrilled to have a full week in CO coming up at the end of the month and plan to ski Beaver and also Vail. We'd also love to explore a nearby town or two...any recommendations for (non-skiing) day trips? We are adventurous adults (2 families) with kids 9-12-13 from IN and OH. We'd love to see the scenery, be outdoors, check out cool local food/drink spots, etc. We've only been to Breckenridge before and are excited to explore other parts of CO. Less interested in things like shopping, museums. Thanks!

Leadville is a good day trip. It's a very historical town and the drive there is beautiful. There are nice views of Mt. Elbert (highest mountain in Colorado) and Mt. Massive. The National Mining Museum is there as well as The Tabor Opera House. I wouldn't recommend driving there if there is a storm it's best if it's a nice day to see the views.

Glenwood Springs would be a good choice if the weather isn't good. It's at a lower elevation and has the Glenwood Caverns adventure park and cave tours. There is also the hot springs swimming pool.

Two excellent suggestions and consider a re-visit to Breckenridge

Hi,

I call these 'sleepy little mountain towns', stretched out along I70. Not much to them, so... I would suggest combining with a non skiing activity. For instance if you're going to Wolcott, try Sage Adventures for Snowmobiling (a child can ride on with you on your snowmobile), sleigh ride dinners at 4 Eagle Ranch & Winter Horseback Rides at 4 Eagle Ranch. Their number is 970 926 1234.. For Leadville, try Dog sledding, https://www.alpineadventuresdogsledding.com/ 719-486-9899 - Other dog sledding companies,,, Mountain Musher Dog Sled Rides 970-653-7877 that one is in Wolcott http://www.mountainmusher.com/about.php .. Winterhawk Dogsled Adventures 719-486-1336 This one's in Leadville www.winterhawkdogsledadv.com/directions.html Snowmobiling 5 min's from Vail with Vail Backcountry Tours 970 476 7749 vailbackcountrytours.com The Nordic Center in East Vail. Snow-bike rentals and 6 miles snow bike trails. Ice skating at the Dobson Ice Arena Vailrec.com BOL in Vail for Bowling. Movie & Dinner theaters in Vail. And Rivers Walk & Movie theater in Edwards. Vail has Guided Snowshoe Hikes & Moonlight Tours 970 754 4675 Tubing on Adventure Ridge.. Forest Flyer Coaster take Eagle Bahn Gondola. There is an unlimited package for the forest flyer & tubing hill combined. So instead of just a different town, maybe also some different activities other then skiing? End of March has Pink Vail, also Taste of Vail Spring Food & Wine Classic and the Easter Egg Hunt in Lionshead.

Thank you all so much for the great ideas and providing such detailed info! I really appreciate it!

What about Steamboat Springs? Do you think it is worth checking out the town if we are not skiing?

@AjSkippy Hot Springs https:/…hot-springs

and the Steamboat Web Site https://www.steamboat.com/ Live chat page for Steamboat - ask any question. Thought you might like that while trying to decide. Think of these mountain towns as different flavors. Steamboat is a favorite for many. Had someone recently describe Steamboat as a Cowboy town.I wouldn't cross Steamboat Springs off your list.

Leadville isn't on I-70 and it is a really significant historic town in CO. Unlike Vail, which was built as a ski resort town in the 1960s it was a gold strike town in the 1800s and has had some interesting characters. Think the Unsinkable Molly Brown - that's where she got her money. And Horace Tabor and the scandal around him and Baby Doe. It's a really interesting town. https://leadville.com/history/

Glenwood Springs was a favorite place of President Theodore Roosevelt and still has its charms. Two natural hot springs companies have pools there. The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool has been there since 1888 and is the world's largest natural hot springs pool. http://www.hotspringspool.com/

There is the newer Iron Mountain Hot Springs - https://www.ironmountainhotsprings.com/ that also owns the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park so you can get a combo pass. The Park has some really nice caves that are included in the pass. https://www.glenwoodcaverns.com/

If you would like to visit a hot springs vapor cave, Glenwood also has that. http://www.yampahspa.com/

Steamboat is quite a drive from Vail and if the weather is not good it can be a challenge. It would be a 4 hr. round trip in good weather. Glenwood half that and an easy drive. Leadville requires only a 2 hr. round trip also. Hope you get a chance to experience more of CO than just one place - we have a lot to offer.

I would skip Steamboat. It’s a great town, but there are many other wonderful towns already mentioned (Breck, Leadville.....) that I personally wouldn’t spend 4 hours of my vacation in a car just to visit another ski town.
