Ouray Dec 15-16

How is the weather in these dates? Could you recommend decent hotels near the town? We have 1 yr old and 4 yr old. The 1yr old will be put in carrier backpack. What about the 4 yr old? should she be on a carrier too or she can make that trail?Thank you.

Its winter then. Will be cold. Well below freezing at night and in the mornings. May stay there all day or on a nice day get up into the 40s F. Trails will be snow packed and icy if thats what you mean. You will need proper boots and possibly traction devices for hiking. Know what you are getting into before you go with kids.

Any winter driving experience? Be aware of Colorado's winter traction laws. Ouray is located in a very mountainous area and you will need good M+S tires.

I'm wondering why you chose Ouray? You will find most shops are not open and there will be very little for you to do there with such young children. Snowshoeing with a baby on your back will be a challenge if you are not experienced and the other popular sport there is ice climbing. https:/…121-hot-winter-adventures-in-ouray

Which trail were you thinking of?

From which direction are you driving to Ouray?

Ouray is one of our family favorites any time of year. There will be enough to do for a 2 day stay even if you just walk around town and go to the hot springs pool. If there is snow, there is a small sledding hill where they close one of the streets.

There are very nice year round walking paths at Ridgway and Montrose, some lower elevation trails and some places in and around Ouray which are fine for winter walks with little ones. Last winter there was very little snow in town and nearby, so you'll need to check locally when you arrive. All of the high country trails already have snow, but there's no way at this point to tell how much will be on the ground by December, as last winter started with an early snow, too. If there is snow, you could hike part way on some of the trails or choose lower elevations. The 4-5 year olds are pretty good about walking/hiking on their own but of course you need to be aware of trail conditions and places where there could be slick rocks or dropoffs.

Check the Trip Advisor reviews for Ouray lodging, but be sure the property is actually in Ouray....some listed are in Ridgway or Telluride.

With 2 little ones, you might look for a place with a suite or larger room.

I'd start with Box Canyon, Matterhorn, Hot Springs Inn, Twin Peaks.
