Getaway in Mystic, CT without a car

Getaway in Mystic, CT without a car

Hi everyone! I'm hoping to get some advice and help in planning an upcoming trip. My boyfriend and I are trying to plan a little romantic getaway for sometime in October. Because we're currently long-distance (I live in Boston, he lives in NYC), we thought that somewhere in between us would be ideal and Mystic seems like a great option! We love the idea of the cute little seaside town with several wineries and breweries in the area for us to check out.

The thing is, neither of us has car. And, because my boyfriend is born and raised in NYC, he does not have a valid driver's license (so if we rented a car to get to all the wineries and breweries, I would have to DD, and that's no fun). I've been trying to find out if it's possible to get around the area by Uber or Lyft, but I can't seem to get a clear answer. Does anyone have experience using a rideshare app or other transportation alternative in the area? I identified a few wineries and breweries that are within 30 minute drives of Mystic, but I'm concerned that we'll get stuck somewhere far away if we can't get a ride back.

Any insight you can provide or alternative suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you all in advance!

For Mystic specifics you should post on that board, not the Boston board.

We are good at saying "Mystic would be nice", but now you need local assistance.

Someone may know but your question is about the Mystic Ct area so you should ask in the CT section.

Having lived near Mystic - stay in the downtown area and there are plenty of great restaurants and bars. You would need to Uber to wineries and to Stonington Borough, if that’s what you would like to do.

There are plenty of uber / lyft around here. You may find it somewhat limited depending on events at the casino as that is where the drivers would be lingering at times.

I would try to find a hotel / B&B near downtown Mystic to give yourself a lot to walk to and then Uber from there.

What breweries have you identified that you are interested in? Grey Sail, Cottrell, Outer Light, Beer'd (2 locations possibly by the time you are here), and Barley Head (within downtown Mystic) are the easiest for you from Mystic plus Jealous Monk Beer Hall.

Thank you! All of those breweries are actually on our list, since we noticed that Westerly, RI is super close by. For vineyards we were looking at Stonington Vineyards, Tapped Apple, and Saltwater Farm.

I cannot help with wineries.

For breweries, I would rank them (and on just my opinion, I love hoppy beers): 1. Outer Light 2. Beer'd (as I hinted at in my previous post, there will be a 2nd Beer'd location soon. Stonington and Groton (new one) so look it up before you come to know which ones are open), 3. Barley Head (location is great if you are in Mystic being downtown), 4. Grey Sail and 5. Cottrell. Grey Sail and Cottrell are about a mile from each other so a longish walk.

The original Beer'd location in Stonington is in an old Mill that now has a few shops and art studios in it. You also should look up Clyde's Cider Mill for when you will be here.

Restaurants - look up the Jealous Monk (more for beer but decent food), Treehouse, Oyster Club, Pizzetta among other Mystic restaurants. Another possibility for you would be to order pasta from Paul's Pasta in Groton and pick it up and bring it with you to Outer Light to enjoy with their beer.

And downtown Westerly definitely has some good stops too.

Uber and Lyft are both great in Mystic and surrounding areas! There is also a free bike rental program in town. Downtown, Mystic Seaport, and many inns and hotels and airbnbs are walkable from the train station.

The best brewery in the area is right in downtown - Barley Head Brewery. Walkable from anything. Beer'd, Outer Light, and Cottrell are also good. Grey Sail has the loveliest tasting room but I don't love the beer!

Restaurants: Engine Room has the best craft beer and cocktail selection. And some pretty amazing food too, especially the chicken and waffles, salads, and starters. Oyster Club, Anthony J's, Bravo Bravo, Daniel Packer Inne, Pizzetta, Mango's Pizza, and Drawbridge Ice Cream are all great as well.

Oh, and in October, Clyde's Cider Mill might be worth a trip. They have hard cider and apple wine tastings on the weekends and are the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the U.S.
