Destin in January

Hello, we have an invitation to spend 2 weeks in Destin in January and are considering it, what would the weather be like then? What is there to do, and how do we get there by air from Seattle?

It's pretty cold in January.

What do you like to do? Winter's are pretty laid back but there are some snowbird activities available.

How do you get here? The two major airlines that service the area are Delta and Northwest.

Bossone,

It is very cold in Destin in January. highs could be in the low 60's and lows in the 40's. Keep in mind with the humidity it will seem much colder. Too cold for the beach unless you can find a mighty big sand dune o protect you. Sun will be nice and you could still get a burn but we avoid the Destin area after October and stay in SW Florida where it gets cool enough. Of course coming from Victoria you wil lthink 60's F will be warm. Not a great lot to do if the beach is ruled out...eat good seafood and there is a great shopping mall there.

bossone-

We spent 3 years on San Juan Island directly across the Haro Straight from you before moving to Destin. January is a crap shoot, we could get a brief freeze or it could be in the mid 60s. There is very little humidity in the winter.

It is a great time of year to play golf.

If you don't find the connections or the price you want into Northwest Florida Regional Airport (VPS)(formally Ft. Walton Beach/Okaloosa County Regional Airport), then look at Pensacola (PNS). It's about an additional hour drive, but you are only doing that twice. Often, the fares are better into PNS>

The Panama City airport is another option.

Also, I think you will enjoy the beach in January. I do. Just wear your sweats or jeans. Low 60's isn't THAT cold.

There are a lot of Canadian "snowbirds" in Destin during the winter. Many of them like to come here because it's much cheaper than if they went farther south in Florida. You can get very good accommodations in Destin for a reasonable price in Jan/Feb. The trade-off, of course, is the weather is much cooler in Destin. The weather is quite variable in Jan, depending on the year. If you are lucky, you could have a bunch of days near 70; if you are unlucky, you may have a bunch of days in the 50's.

We are from Winnipeg, Canada and will be spending the month of January in Panama City Beach.

Temps around 70 in January sound pretty good to us.

Will be staying near Pier Park Mall.
