Tipping for houskeeping?

Okay, I feel like such an idiot. After being here for 6 days I just noticed there is an envelope with our housekeepers name on it on the table of the resort we are staying at. I don't know why I didn't see it sooner. My question is...how much do you normally tip and is it a daily thing or just a big tip when you check out? I hope it's when you check out...because I feel so bad otherwise! Thanks for your help! :)

Tip daily. The same maid may not service your room every night of your stay, but don't feel bad that you waited. You may want to speak with the housekeeping manager and find out who has been servicing your room so you can make sure the tip gets to them.

My tipping standard is 1 or 2 dollars per person per night in a standard hotel. 2 or 3 dollars per person per night in a luxury hotel. If I am a slob or if they go out of there way with turn down service, extra towels, etc. I will throw in a couple of dollars more.

Good topic - I did notice such an envelope at our hotel in Key West for our recent stay.

My concern for tipping is this - you already pay a hefty price to stay at some of these places - so if you just leave a couple bucks in the envelope, isn't that slighting the housekeeper a bit? Our hotel recommended a tip of 10% or so - if that is the case, our tip would have been $25 or slightly more per night.

I'm sorry, but I am not leaving a tip like that when we are paying a solid price already for the room. I also find it hard to just leave a couple bucks., looks like a pittance. What would you all do?

If you are getting good service than I think 2 to 5 per day is good. This is just my opinion. If you are staying for a week, you may not have the same maid the whole week. If you take how many rooms the maids clean (say 10 rooms X 5 dollars) that an extra 50 a day for them. Not bad for throwing a few clean towels in the room and making a bed.
