slimy green algae in water

We had been to PCB the first week of June and although we had a great time we noticed that the water was full of slimey green algae (not seaweed). It was in every crack and crevice when you took your suit off. We have never experienced this kind of algea before ever since we have been coming to PCB and wondered if it was common in years prior or if it could be oil related. Anyway we are coming back the end of July and wondered what the status of the algae is?.

We do get it from time to time during the summer months. It gets blown in sometimes with storms. (Has nothing at all to do with the oil spill) It doesn't hurt anything just a little annoying. We went to Pier Park beach yesterday and there was some alge in the water. After lunch we decided to relocate down to Schooners and there wasn't any alge there at all. Just part of nature.

Thanks Steve. It really didn't bother me too much I was just hoping it was a natural occurance. We stayed down the west end in June and this time we are staying on Thomas Drive so hopefully the weather and water will be beautiful.

It is kind of gross! We have seen it when it was awful and we have been when the water looks crystal clear. We go in October every year and I do not recall ever seeing it then. So far every October the water has been just beautiful. Seems like April, June and July it has been worse.

We are in Panama City now staying at the Boardwalk and the algae is horrible and there is such strong nasty odor that you can hardly stand to be outside I'm assuming from the algae. We've been coming to Panama City for years just most of the time earlier and have never seen it. Is this odor common? It's horrible and a big turn off to come to the beach.

We just returned for our second trip to PCB on Sat. Last week it was fine Mon through Wed. but by Wed. afternoon it was horrible. By Friday you couldn't even get in the water it was so thick. We were lucky and got a few good beach days but the rest of the time we had to spend in the pool.

We are here now at Carillon Beach which is on the west side of PCB. Came in on Sat 7/31. Water was nice here on Sat and Sun but conditions have deteriorated significantly since then. Green algae is very thick and pervasive all along the shoreline. Took a ride along 30-A yesterday and that area is affected by the algae as well.

Thanks for the update, guess we will see what its like when we get there, We were coming regardless if the oil came ashore, guess the algae won't keep us away either. Just looking forward to a week on the beach.

We are at Aqua right now and it's pretty bad but does not smell bad from it. We still have been in the water but not in it today since it is so thick and close to shore.

It has been bad this year but we have waded out past it and the water is awesome. It does stink though.
