Rent increases for shops

The little group of stores where Sanibel Bean is located has been sold the current tenants evicted or their rent revised to 3 or 4 times the current rate! Read the article and decide what to do about the current owners.

How very disappointing - and a sign of things to come?

I'm with you sunny. I was torn about the prospect of choosing between good coffee or high principle.

It's more likely Sunny that the new owners had no intersted parties willing to pay their new rates. Times are hard at the moment!

All we hear over here is 'credit crunch, oil reached a record high ,subprime mortgages and now Fannie mae and somebody else we have never heard of.

At least you coffee freaks have some good news!!!

Now was that a regular or a decaf you wanted?

Dew - lol, decaf is for sissy's so I'll take extra strength regular :)

Sanibelog - honestly, I wasn't taking the high or low roads on this thread, mostly playing devil's advocate based on what I have watched my friends local business's go through. Raising rents works in high growth times, obviously we aren't there right now. But truth be told, I would probably still go to the Bean either way, for several reasons. I like to support local shops when I vacation AND trying to explain to my small children and the grouchy grownups in my extended family why we can't go to the Bean anymore just isn't worth the few bucks I would be withholding from them. And by grouchy grownups I mean my FIL. :)

Just back from Sanibel and multiple trips to the Bean. Glad they worked everything out - certainly doesn't look like the business is seeing any repercussions from the rent scuffle. There were lines nearly out the door every time we visited throughout the week. The coffee is as good as ever, and we still love the egg/roasted pepper bagel sandwich...

Sunny:

I understand, but I am funny that way. I figure there is not much I can do in this world to support good and not support bad. (I think raising rents to drive out tenants is bad, and i believe the landlords are the people who own/run the Bean)

So I make my personal stands by giving or withholding my business. Sometimes, i tis a real sacrifice, such as giving up the Bean. Sometimes it just takes more work, such as searching for shoes that are NOT made in China.

Anyway, I'm glad things are back to normal and I can drink the hot, black at the Bean without pangs of conscience.

I am soo relieved to hear that the rent issues are resolved.

I have been thinking about how my next trip would not include the Bean that we loved so much! Worries over.

Back to my Sanibel day-dreams until my next visit.(-:

My 2 cents.... As I read through five pages of posts I wondered if anyone actually knows who Marcel is??? I'm so glad this is resolved for the tenants and I'm sure a HUGE lesson for this young man Marcel who's adoptive parents purchased the business for him when it went up for sale because he loved working there. (So I'm SURE he is NOT business savy) I tried to find the article when his family bought the store for him with no success. I believe the family also donated land to the city.

Anyway, this young man waited on me a few times and it is my opinon he had no idea what he was doing other than....An good idea at the time that went very wrong! I'm sure he had help to get this one figured out!

I have boycotted several things over the years and not going to The Bean would have been hard....

Spent 5 weeks on Sanibel in May /June time frame....had a great trip!
