1st time to Geneva/ St. Charles

Husband & I are looking to stay at either Geneva or St. Charles, near either downtown area & walk around, have a nice dinner, and a decent hotel room.

1) which town has more to offer that you can walk around to? looking for cute shops, scenery, paddleboat cruise, etc.

2) what hotel to stay that's either on the river, or within walking distance to either downtown area?

3) what romantic restaurants are recommended?

4) is there a trolley or other transportation around town, if we chose to stay at a hotel further out?

I would highly recommend staying in Geneva over St. Charles. St. Charles was not relaxing (highway running right thru the middle of town with cars & semis flying thru there) and Geneva is wonderful (quaint). Lots of small shops in a nice quiet atmosphere. Recommended casual restaurant would be Egg Harbor Cafe (breakfast/lunch). Very good food and staff were awesome. For a romantic dinner, I would recommend Atwaters in the Herrington Inn. Ask for a table near the windows. I would stay at the Herrington. It's not cheap, but it is first class!! It is also within walking distance of everything.
