I'm staying at Doubletree in Skokie next weekend for a wedding, but would like to head to Chicago for the afternoon. Is there any public transportation from Skokie to downtown Chicago? Any tips would be appreciated.

The CTA yellow line train will get you downtown. You'll take it to Howard St & transfer to a red line train. www.transitchicago.com for public transit information.

You can catch a CTA bus across the street from your hotel on Skokie Blvd. It will take you to the train station. If it's nice out and you feel like walking, it's about a mile from your hotel to the train station.

There are a couple options. You can catch the Number 97 CTA bus southbound on Skokie Blvd across from the Doubletree to the Dempster Station and transfer to the Yellow Line. You can also take the 97 bus all the way to the Howard Station. It will be a bit slower than the train, but you'll save one transfer.

A third option is to catch a Number 215 Pace (suburban) bus on Golf Road at the side of the hotel. It also runs to the Howard Station.

From Howard, you can either take the Red Line train downtown or catch the Number 147 bus. The 147 runs express down Lake Shore Drive for 4 miles so it's a little faster and much more scenic as you'll be able to see Lincoln Park and the beaches along the lake.

If you mean the weekend of August 15-17, be advised the Air and Water Show will be happening along the shore north of the Magnificant Mile. You'll probably be able to see some of the show from the 147 or you may wind up stuck in traffic. So, you may want to stick to the Red Line train, just be prepared for extra crowds on either.

You may also want to check the CTA site for day passes. They allow unlimited rides for a 24-hour period. I believe you may be able to purchase them at the Jewel supermarket next to the Doubletree. If not, ask the concierge.

You could also take the metra from morton grove but will need a local taxi each way to the train station.
