We are wanting to stay in a Chicago suburb and take public transportation into the City to see the sights of Chicago, but I saw somewhere that the yellow line (which would be used if we stay in Skokie) only runs weekdays. Am I reading this correctly? Can someone give me the best approach (which suburb) for staying outside the city (for around $100) and get in with the least amount if headache on Saturday, December 12, 2015.

Any reason you're considering Skokie? Hotel prices are only about $30 less than downtown for that weekend. The cheaper option might be the O'Hare area - check out the Renaissance Suites, steps from the Blue Line, and on budget at $100 a night.

Mainly worried about managing the traffic downtown and paying to park at a hotel would add $$ to a hotel stay if hotel parking is even an option

use www.spothero.com to park your car downtown and save lots of money. Staying in a suburb and commuting is silly.

There's the Yellow Line from Skokie, which may not be as convenient as it sounds, or you can take a PACE bus (there are several), which if you do (use the bus) the hotel possibilities expand. For example, you could stay at the Holiday Inn Skokie, on Touhy Ave., and take the PACE 290 (running about every 20 minutes until late-night when they are further apart) to the Howard St. terminal and from there the "El" (Red Line) Downtown.
