Where to take a family within 2 hours of Utica, IL

My family (me, my husband and four young kids) will be in Utica, IL Wednesday and Thursday and are looking for recommendations of other family locations/activities within 2 hours of Utica. We originally could not stay through the weekend but plans have changed and our hotel in Utica has our room booked already so we will be heading somewhere else on Friday. Thought about downtown Chicago but have ruled that out. Any other suggestions? We live in central IL but have never traveled north and this trip is very spur of the moment.

I know you said you ruled it out, but Chicago is really worth seeing, and it's not difficult to get to from Utica. If you don't want to drive in the city, you could take a train from one of the suburbs.

I haven't actually looked at hotels, but this weekend is Lollapalooza, which means that hotels in the city will be scarce and expensive. Can't speak to the suburbs, but if you are able to get something in a closer in maybe northern suburb, you could hit the beach and maybe the Kohl's Children's Museum. There is also the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, which my nephew loved when he was smaller. Or what about heading towards the Galena area, along the Mississippi? Would southern Wisconsin, Lake Geneva area, be too far?

I don't have kids, just trying to think of some possibilities that we did with my extended family.

second the union idea---cool train museum there... you can also head east on I-80 and get to indiana dunes, which will come in at your 2 hour limit, traffic permitting..... also, what about turkey run state park in indiana?

if you go to the chicago suburbs, maybe great america in gurnee, ILL? it'll be a tad more than 2 hours, traffic permitting, but it's worth a looksee... also, relatively nearby, is illinois state beach.... not the nicest beach in the world, but a beach nonetheless:
