Hiking Starved Rock in winter?

Would like to hike Starved Rock during the winter and see the ice falls. When is a good time to go? How are the hiking conditions, would I need snow shoes or special gear (I am not climbing the falls)?

I'd recommend wearing ice grippers on your shoes/boots if there is snow on the ground. The trails get a lot of traffic, so the snow is trampled down to a slick, icy surface. I bought a pair 5 years ago, and have never fallen when I've had them on. Only $20, so a good investment.

A good time to go would be when there are eagles nesting on the island. It's really something special to see. Make sure to bring binoculars.
