Is there any type of plaque / monument / tourist spot for the connection of Radar O'Reilly and Ottumwa?
Welcome to the Iowa forum, Dan! If there is a Radar O'Reilly monument of any kind in Ottumwa, it is well concealed from internet searches. I found nothing. I haven't been to Ottumwa in years. The best monument dedicated to a fictional television character is in Riverside, Iowa. "Future Birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk". http://poastcards.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/kirk-birthplace.jpg
Dan R.: The closest thing I have found to a "tourist spot" in Ottumwa regarding Radar O'Reilly, M*A*S*H, and the real "Radar" Don Shaffer is a small display at the train station <http://www.greatamericanstations.com/Stations/OTM>. I believe there is more in the county museum upstairs - but I haven't visited it yet. There are some great locally owned restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops close to the train station. Best wishes.
Rosanne Barr's Ex was from Ottumwa I believe. I forget his name.
PS Tom Arnold
That is too bad, I would like to visit Ottumwa but I would like to come back with a picture showing that it has ties with my favorite TV show and one of my favorite characters.
Hi MASH4!
Why don't you print a life size photo of Radar and bring him along with you ala "Flat Stanley"?
You can probably get pictures of yourself with Radar all over town, especially near Ottumwa signs.
No I do not believe so. Don Shaffer formerly of Otumwa is the real person who was called Radar in the book and series though. http://ktvo.com/news/local/radar-oreilly-is-leaving-ottumwa
Tom Arnold.
I have yet to visit the Wapello County Museum (upstairs in the railroad station), but apparently there is a room devoted to Radar O'Reilly http://www.wapellocountymuseum.com/ . I have seen the small M*A*S*H collection on the Amtrak level http://www.trainweb.org/usarail/ottumwa.htm .
Radar now calls Crystal River Florida home and is super low key. He will talk to you if you see him but prefers to stay out of the limelight.
