Portsmouth to Provincetown?

Officials from Provincetown and Portsmouth, NH recently met to discuss the possibility of ferry service between the two towns. If it comes off, it would be a 70 mile, 2 ½ hour trip. This has been talked about before but the idea never developed.

Portsmouth, by itself, is not a big enough town to support a ferry terminal, but it could serve as a central point for people coming from perhaps Canada or northern New England. Drive to Portsmouth and hop on the ferry. Of course Portsmouth would need a large parking lot. Or maybe bus tours could drop off people for the ferry. Actually I will be surprised if it ever happens.

I'd be surprised, too. Maybe just run this on weekends for folks going for the day, for Saturday overnight, or for a week? Can't think they'd fill it during the week, though

I wonder why a ferry was even considered? I agree that this is rather a long shot.

A ferry from Portsmouth to Boston might make more sense as a substitute for train service.

So, if this happens, ferry from Portsmouth>Provincetown and then Provincetown>Boston through the existing ferry service. Perhaps this is what planners are focusing on, an alternate route to Boston. It'll be an expensive boat ride, that's for sure.

Interesting idea. I can see it drawing customers from Maine, NH, and even northeastern Massachusetts. Parking would be less expensive than leaving the car in Boston.

Hard to evaluate without having more information about schedules though but the planners must think there is a demand.

Portsmouth to Provincetown to Boston would be a very, very long trip even assuming that the schedules merge well. Provincetown wants people to come to town for a while to shop or stay and not just use the town as an intermediate hub on the way to Boston.
