transport from New York to Provencetown

My husband and I are traveling from New Zealand to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. we arrive and depart the US from NY. Our nephew lives there so we wish to spend some time him. We would also like to spend some time on the Cape. I have been busy researching and Provincetown looks really appealing. Our problem is how do we get there? We would arrive Provincetown on the 27th September and depart the 30th September. As these are weekdays there doesn't seem to be a bus to Provincetown. While we could take the ferry, we would like to be back in NY by 5pm and that doesn't seem to work with the ferry timetable and train from Boston. have spent a long time reading trip advisor and searching the net trying to find the best way to get from NY to Provincetown, Any advice would be gratefully received. We are competent drivers but in New Zealand, we drive on the Left, so we are not keen to drive in New York. Should we pick up a rental car somewhere along the way?

Why haven't you considered flying? And if you are renting a car anyway in Provincetown to get around, then you should be able to handle NYC, where most of the streets are one-way anyway.

Would you consider flying to BOS and getting a car there to bring to the Cape? That would also give you some flexibility to see other parts of the Cape as well.

Flying into Boston is your best option. Although you would still have to negotiate Boston traffic to get out of the airport.

Now that the Big Dig is a distant memory however it's a pretty straight and easy shot. After the car rental counter you pay one toll ($3.50) to enter the Williams tunnel and then use exit 24 for 93 South. Keep left after leaving the tunnel and jump into the HOV lane for cars with two or more occupants if you want to avoid a bit of Boston traffic. Then continue to the Sagamore bridge (unless going to Bourne) on Rt 3 which becomes Rt. 6 once over the bridge.

You can also take the bus right outside baggage claim to Hyannis and rent a car there if that would be more comfortable for you.

You could take the train to Providence and rent and return the car there, and get back to NY by 5.
