Nearest Mountain to Brainerd

Hi

I'm looking for a Mountainous area within a 50 mile radius of Brainerd (Minnesota) or specifically, Gull Lake. Could anyone please suggest a place and what could we might see there in terms of wildlife etc?

If there are any other impressive mountain ranges further afield, it would be good to hear about them also

Thanks,

Llyr

Having grown up in Minnesota, I can say that the whole state doesn't really have anything that you would call a mountain, especially within 50 miles of Brainerd. Minnesota is known for its lakes, not its mountains. If you want really "impressive mountains", you need to go to the Rockies in the western U.S. Harney Peak in the Black Hills of South Dakota is the highest point east of the Rockies, but it's going to be way more than 50 miles from Brainerd, and even Harney is not what most people picture when they think of a mountain (purple with snow on top).

There's a tall hill on the west side of Gull Lake (near Brainerd) which is home to Ski Gull. I don't know if you can hike there in the summer. A local or someone with more knowledge would have to answer that. Pillsbury State Forest is nearby and has nice hiking trails.

The Saw Tooth Mountains are in Lutsen, but that is approximately 3.5 hours from Brainerd. I wouldn't exactly call them mountains as they are not very tall. There is a great deal of wild life in that area including moose and bear, but they are rarely seen.

Yep, Sawtooth mountains along the North Shore of Lake Superior, was the only MT. range in Minnesota. Used to be over 14,000 ft., but you're a little late, they were scoured down by 3 ice ages, over 10,000 yrs. ago.

3174 is right, no MTs esp. within 50 miles of Gull Lake. Just lots of lakes, (left over when those glaciers melted).
