Craps: what is a fire bet?

Hi all,

Will be leaving Oct.18 for 8 nights

I like to hit the craps tables ( like to play the field, works for me;) but have no clue what a fire bet is

Also what casino's still pay 3 to 1 on 12 or 2

(can't remember between LV or Reno which is what)

I know Bill's only pays 2 to 1 on either the 2 or 12

(another way to short change to player)

Thanks,

Bobear

Quoting the Wizard of Vegas, "I used to indicate the odds on the field bet and hop bets as well. However, I think I would be correct in saying that everybody pays 3-1 on the 12 on the field, except all Harrah's properties other than Caesars Palace, and the Casino Royale, which pay 2-1 only."

The fire bet is a bet that you will get a "hot" shooter (get it?) who will make a bunch of points on different numbers. Small bet, long odds, big house advantage, big payoff.

A fire bet ... You place the bet before a new shooter. If the shooter makes 4 points it pays 25:1. For 5 points 250:1 and for 6 points 2500:1. So let's say $1 fire bet and a hot shooter hits 5 points, that's $250. Have fun!

I also discovered the HORN bet this year. Craps is a wonderful mindboggling game.

To be a bit more accurate, for the fire bet the shooter has to make *distinct* points. That is, if the shoooter makes a point on 5, then 4, then 8, that is three. If he/she then makes another point on 5, for the purposes of the fire bet it's still only been three points.

Obviously it's a bad bet but some people cannot resist the tiny possibility of a big payout.

mpo8000 - what is a HORN bet? Also, what is the minimum you can place on a fire bet? Is it the table minimum? I keep hearing about $1 and $2 bets. Even though the odds aren't good, its still just a buck or two. Worth the risk to me.

That is the philosophy that a lot of people hold. However, all you have to do is glance at the craps felt to see how those $1 bets add up.

The same logic applies to those gimmick side bets at the blackjack table such as "Match the Dealer". People figure, "I'll just put a dollar on it." Sure, so you're losing an extra dollar every hand. You might hit the bet once every 20 hands or so, but you don't win back as much as you lost.

Still, you have the right to spend your money as you see fit. Maybe the excitement of having the chance is worth the almost sure loss of your money. Just know what you're getting into.

Best bets in craps is pass/dont pass, come/dont come and place 6 \ 8. All other bets have high house edges and should be avoided.

HORN BET:

Although the 2, 3, 12 and 11 may be bet separately, this area is also known as the "horn." A player makes a horn bet by handing the bet to the dealer, calling out, for example, "$4 horn bet." This would give him $1 on each of the four one-roll propositions. Payoff is 30 for 1 on a 2 or 12, A 3 or 11 pay 15-for-1. True odds are 35 to 1 (2 & 12) and 17 to 1 (3 & 11). The house edge on all four bets is a whopping 16.66%. Obviously a bad bad bet. Not recommended!

Since the horn is a $4 bet, many people will be "high horns," which puts $1 on each of the 2,3,11,12 and an extra $1 on one of the numbers. Most common is probably a high horn yo, with $1 on the 2,3 and 12 and $2 on the 11. Another common option is to bet the extra $1 on one of the numbers "for the boys. Toss down $5 and announce "horn bet, extra on the yo for the boys."

I don't mind the sucker bets at craps... but I don't like horns because (1) it's a single roll bet so goes quick and (2) you are "betting against yourself"... so even if you win one bet, you lose the other three.
